ÇAYCUMA CULTURE AND SPORTS CENTER

Developed as an architectural competition project for Çaycuma, this multi-functional public building brings cultural and sports programs together within a single civic complex. The relationship between the building and the city, pedestrian access from different levels, and the continuity between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape formed the main design principles. The horizontal massing is defined by generous overhangs and transparent façades that create strong visual connections with the surrounding open spaces. A folded roof geometry brings the different functions together under a shared architectural language while also emphasizing entrances and public areas. Timber soffits, dark exterior surfaces and natural stone establish a warm yet clearly defined material character. Inside, large spans, generous volumes and natural light shape the main spatial experience. Timber ceiling surfaces in the swimming pool and sports areas help soften the scale of the larger spaces, while cultural and social areas are planned as flexible environments that can accommodate different events and activities. The stepped approach, pedestrian routes and landscaped areas in front of the building were designed not only as an entrance sequence but as an extension of public life in the city. An illuminated vertical marker strengthens the building’s visibility within the urban context and clearly defines the main entrance.
